President's Message - February 2013
|
Come and join us March 21st at Medina High School in the Middle Auditorium from 6-8pm for the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA) investor panel!
The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is in full swing this year with 17 students from 5 school districts in Medina County working on 12 unique new businesses. The students begin by identifying their strengths and interests. Many of the entrepreneurs brought an idea when they started in the program and others took their time to identify business opportunities. All of them have attended the classes, completed hours of work outside the classroom and discovered new skills and talents. Already, several parents have commented on the growth and confidence they have seen in their entrepreneurs.
Westfield Insurance is our premier sponsor and this program is made possible by businesses in our community that have supported us as sponsors, mentors, investors, speakers, instructors, graphic design artists and other volunteers. Several of our local restaurants and food retailers have donated food. All together, the program involves over 40 individual volunteers and as many as 50 businesses.
Each week since early October the entrepreneurs have met with these volunteers for three hours a class. The entire program will run 30 weeks with topics covering everything from finance, marketing, insurance, sales, legal concerns, to developing business and marketing plans. The students have finished their business plans and will make a presentation requesting start-up funds for their businesses in front of a panel of “investors”.
Each investor on the panel represents a $700 contribution to the entrepreneurs. They are asked to review each of the business plans and sit on the panel to hear each of the presentations. After all of the presentations the panel adjourns to a private area to make their decisions as to how they would like to make their “investment”. They can divide their $700 among several entrepreneurs or make one contribution to one business. The investment is a contribution; the panelist does not own a part of the business or come to the panel expecting to profit from a business.
One student will be chosen by the panel to attend the Saunder’s Scholarship Competition in April in Rochester, NY to compete against YEA! entrepreneurs from around the country for up to $30,000 in scholarship money. The trip and the experience are paid for by the national Young Entrepreneurs Academy.
As of this coming May we will have graduated 30 students through the Medina YEA! over the two years we have conducted the program. We are the only Chamber in Ohio that is participating and we have received national recognition. YEA! also has a relationship with the Shark Tank TV series and the US Chamber of Commerce. We will be developing the 2013-14 programs and looking for sponsors, volunteers, speakers and investors. If you are interested, please contact the Chamber office for more details.

|
On April 30th, 2013 the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 75th anniversary! It is truly a milestone for our business community and the Chamber itself. Not many organizations have the distinguished opportunity to say they have been serving their membership for 75 years. It is my honor to be the 2013 Chairman of Board and I am excited to celebrate our history as well as participate in our future.
Your Chamber of Commerce is made up of 3 major divisions designed to serve you, the Member.

-
A relationship with our schools that continues to encourage partnerships and synergies

Chairperson's Message November 2012
|
Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.
Actually the complete quote is, “If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.” (General Colin Powell)
That prevailing attitude is reflected in the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber’s achievements and accomplishments are not based on one specific component, but on many. The strength of our community lies in its leaders and business owners and the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce plays a major role in educating, advocating, and supporting local businesses and economic development. As the outgoing chair, I extend a sincere thanks to our Chamber members, the board of directors, our ex-officios, committee chairs, and the Chamber staff for this past year’s encouragement and their selfless dedication to the Chamber’s mission. True leaders are those who are engaged and it has been an honor and privilege to serve the Chamber community which help make Medina a great place to live and businesses to thrive.
Let us remember, for the success of our future, one cannot forget our past. This year marked a huge milestone in the history of our great organization and its success is reflected in those truly dedicated individuals who worked in the office. Our two Chamber administrative assistants, Karen Whitaker and Susan Murawski celebrated 30 years (Karen) and 15 years (Susan) of dedicated devotion to our members. Both are passionate about their positions held and their quality of service shows in their longevity.
And speaking of endurance, one who knows the long standing history and past knowledge on the operation of the Chamber, our president, Debra Lynn-Schmitz, needs to be recognized. Twenty-five (25) years of passion for the job is commendable. Debra understands the importance of her role and the Chamber’s role in the community, conducts herself as a business person who has a vested interest in the organization she operates, and her drive to educate herself benefits the Chamber membership and establishes a well-informed Chamber board. Next time you see these individuals, please consider thanking them personally.
While the present becomes the past in a matter of seconds, history was made this year with the hiring of a new addition to the Chamber office staff. Jaclyn Ringstmeier started in April 2012 filling the VP position and she is the dynamic, visionary leader the Chamber was seeking. Jaclyn is someone to watch in the future because she is making history now; growing our membership numbers, adding new inventive events, and developing retention tools beneficial to all involved. Great things will continue to happen in 2013!
In less than a month, Chad Wilson of Rapid Marketplace, will be taking over the chairman’s role for 2013. As a successful business owner, Chad believes in the importance of supporting locally owned businesses and employs local people. This great characteristic makes him a positive role model who is committed to the Medina business community. With his guidance, the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce is in a good place. I look forward to working with him and support his efforts in the continued success of our organization.
As shared in previous communications, the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce encourages all members in our business community to stay involved and be informed. Not in a self serving way but through your support of those local businesses and our member investors. As a board member and chair, it has been honor to learn and serve along side so many wise, informed individuals. Remember these educated people live and/or work locally and your loyalty to other Chamber members will drive their loyalty in return. Things look good going forward and with a prevailing attitude, it will generate success.
Thank you to everyone who made 2012 a year for me to remember. I look forward to my continued role as past chair in 2013 and extend my wishes to all for a safe, healthy and prosperous New Year.
Respectfully submitted,
Valerie L. Rapp

Chairperson's Message - October 2012

HARD WORK - STUDENTS IMPACT OUR COMMUNITY TOO.
Aside from all the political articles and letters to the editor appearing in our local publications, have you noticed the one huge positive topic these days is student related? There seems to be an ongoing theme ranging from Medina being named one of America’s Best Communities for Young People, to the 10th year celebration of Leadership Medina County’s Junior Program, and now the continuation of the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce’s YEA! Program. A true reinforcement centered on the importance of our youth and the realization which, we all know, confirms the commitment of our business community and effective, top quality education.
For the second year the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce is offering the Young Entrepreneurs Academy to local students interested in starting and running a real business through the assistance of local leaders, community minded members, and educators. The good news, with the success of last year’s program, the word is out and the Academy is growing.
Kathy Breitenbucher, a member of the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors, CEO of The Pedestal Group and an entrepreneur herself, was a facilitator for the first year’s YEA Program. Under the direction of Debra Lynn-Schmitz, our Chamber President and program manager of YEA, Kathy has agreed to continue and provide her expertise to this year’s class. Below are a few of her reflections regarding our past year’s class and our upcoming entrepreneurs.
“Last year's YEA class was 10 students, 9 from Medina High School. After 30 weeks of classes and over 40 business leaders volunteering their time, one student has gone into her business and using it as her career. Another student is working on his business to launch in the near future and has also made a pitch to Shark Tank (the TV show) to obtain additional funding. Three of the students have chosen not to pursue their original ideas as they are now attending college, but are using the knowledge they obtained through the class to help fund their schooling. One student has continued to pursue her business part time and on breaks.
This year class started off strong with 21 students on October 10th. The students come from Medina, Brunswick, Buckeye, and Cloverleaf and we are thrilled with the participation from the Career Center. The weekend of October 20th was the big brainstorming session where the students will begin to settle on their business ideas.
The program has over 50 volunteers who have already signed up to commit time to this project over the next 27 weeks. In addition, the Medina Chamber is looking for mentors to help the students guide their projects through the business planning stage and investors to be part of our own Shark Tank panel.
Through this program the students will:
-
Determine a solid business idea
-
Pitch the idea to bankers to make sure they are on a good track
-
Develop a business plan
-
Develop a marketing plan
-
Develop a business identity (logo, website, etc.)
-
Go for funding to our investor panel
-
Participate in a trade show
-
Network with business leaders throughout our community.
The Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce is thrilled this year to have been invited to the Medina County Business Awards on October 30th as the theme is Entrepreneurship. The Medina County Economic Development Corporation felt it was a great opportunity for the students to hear more about entrepreneurship in Medina County.
Overall, the commitment from our business community to this project has been awe-inspiring. The wealth of knowledge and the willingness to share is something that is clearly not the norm for these programs as on the calls with Rochester (where the program was developed). They are often surprised by the level of commitment we have.
The Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce and its board of directors would like to thank those individuals, businesses and owners (past and present) who have contributed to the success of the YEA! Program. With so much involvement from the Medina community, one could hope for continued recognition, not only locally, but state and nationally too.
Just a gentle reminder, Tuesday, November 6th is election day. The Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce believes and supports the electoral process and encourages all to exercise your right to vote. Make sure you are part of Ohio’s future by being included.
Respectfully submitted,
Valerie L. Rapp

President's Message September 2012
|
How to Vote
The Chamber is about business success, capitalism, the free enterprise system. We exist because our business community sees a need for a voice. Collectively, our voice is about business regardless of party or position.
At a breakfast last week, FirstMerit brought Economist Dr. Ken Mayland, President of ClearView Economics LLC, for a presentation, 2012-13 Review and Preview; Understanding the Economic Outlook. The picture he presented was not positive based on statistics and data for our immediate economic outlook. Consumer spending is faltering, gas prices are rising, industrial production is flattening, employment is not growing to maintain economic growth. GDP growth is under 3% and wages are not keeping up with inflation. Not an encouraging trend. The good news is that there is some growth in certain areas such as oil and gas well drilling and the auto industry, and productivity has increased. Dr. Mayland stated that housing, energy, regulatory, fiscal and monetary policies are dragging us down. We are still facing a fiscal cliff with cuts in the tax rates, payroll tax reduction, unemployment benefits and additional expenses.
As I speak with business leaders the primary concern is uncertainty. They are somewhat reluctant to invest, hire and commit to growth with so many unknowns hanging over our economy.
As we all know, the only absolutely perfect candidate is the one that is just like us. That is not going to happen unless you are running for an office. I am not telling you how to vote, but as a business leader, employer and investor it is important that you sort through the information about each candidate and decide which economic model you believe will keep us off the cliff, help resolve the unknown and improve the economic outlook. There are distractions on both sides that dilute the issue the Chamber’s primary concerns; jobs and employment. Which direction will lead you to say things are better four years from now?
I know there are many other interest groups and influences that impact your decision. It is up to you to determine what is important and where a candidate stands on issues for you personally and for your community, region, state and nation. Please, make certain you vote.
Candidate Interviews
Thank you to the candidates that participated in our candidate interviews with Eric Shaffer and Dave Mueller for Medina TV. The interviews should begin airing on Channel 37 the week of September 24 and we will provide a link on the Chamber’s website so you can watch them when it is convenient for you.
Ballot Issues and Answers
Do you need more information on the ballot issues to make an informed decision? On Tuesday, October 23 the Chamber will hold a lunch with tables and presentations on the local and state ballot issues. This is your opportunity to get the facts and ask questions and still gives you time for early voting. The lunch is from 11:30 to 1 pm at Weymouth Country Club for $16.00. Please RSVP at www.medinaohchamber.com.
BWC Director Stephen Buehrer
Last month we had the honor of hosting Stephen Buehrer, Director of the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation at our Safety Council. Mr. Buehrer spoke to a room of about 200 about changes in the BWC. He explained that Gov. Kasich has given a mandate to the BWC to “improve Ohio’s workers’ compensation system so that it is no longer a barrier to economic growth”. Some of the changes included:
-
Saved Ohio’s private employers $130 million in premiums over two years by reducing average base rates by 4 percent from the 2011 policy year.
-
Reduced public employer rates by 5 percent, saving local governments $22 million a year.
-
Saved an additional $80 million by reducing our budget by 12 percent over this biennium.
-
Created the Grow Ohio Program to help boost economic development. The program allows new employers to save up to 53 percent on workers’ compensation premiums.
-
As part of the Lt. Governor’s Common Sense Initiative, BWC established a one-time forgiveness program that waives penalties and interest for first-time lapsed premium.
-
Created Destination: Excellence, a new rating plan that aims to improve return-to-work rates by rewarding employers for building a risk management plan that focuses on safety, prevention, and returning those who are injured to their jobs more quickly. Nearly 5,000 employers signed up during its first enrollment period.
-
Promoted workplace safety by expanding the safety council rebate program, which rewards employers for reducing workplace accidents, as well as by creating a $4 million wellness grant program to help employers meet the challenges related to rising incidences of obesity and chronic disease, as well as an aging workforce—all factors that contribute to workplace injuries and slow the recovery of injured workers.
-
Increased funding that supports Ohio’s 80 safety councils by 10 percent.
-
Improved Pharmacy Management to ensure workers are being prescribed drugs that help, not hinder, their recovery.
-
Created the first-ever formulary, which will save an estimated savings of $15 million in its first 18 months. Early data show the number of narcotics prescribed to injured workers by decreased by 12 percent, or 1.1 million doses, in the first three months following the full implementation of the formulary.
-
Initiated measures to ensure BWC will only cover drugs related to the specific injury.
-
Changed rules to prohibit decertified providers from prescribing drugs for injured workers.
-
Established a lock-in program to improve the safety of medication prescribed to injured workers and limit the practice of doctor and pharmacy shopping.
-
Emphasized fraud department efforts and broadened the focus to all types of fraud.
-
First-ever attempt to close a non-compliant business through an injunction.
-
Decertified one of the state’s most prolific providers for inappropriately prescribing narcotics.
-
From January, 2011 to present, BWC’s Special Investigations Department obtained 191 convictions, identifying a total of $85.9 million in savings for the State Insurance Fund. We receive a 6-1 return on investment in Fraud detection.

Chairperson's Message - Valerie Rapp August 2012
|
FROM THE DESK OF THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD
VALERIE RAPP
Without the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce?!!!!
It would be difficult to imagine a business community functioning without the support of its local chamber. More importantly, one would wonder how many businesses would choose to locate in the Medina area, and remain, without the commitment and support of our Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce. In a world of negativity, where it is so easy to point out the shortcomings of others, but not address where the problem truly lies, the presence of our Chamber contributes to a positive community.
I was reminded by our newest board member, Kathy Breitenbucher, “It would be like when Clarence, the angel, shows George Bailey what the world would be like if he hadn’t been in it. The movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, gave us the opportunity to see how one person’s life affects so many other.” One would wonder how many successful businesses would be where they are to today if it were not for the involvement and support of the “our” Chamber.
On July 27th, the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce board of directors met for its mid-year retreat. During that half day meeting, the reflective question, “What would it be like without the Greater Medina Chamber?” was asked by Don Simmons, one of the board’s ex-officios. This is a great opportunity to share some collective thoughts from our informative board members regarding the lack of our Chamber’s presence. While this question could be viewed from a negative perspective, the responses were totally turned around and the positive comments emerged because “There is a Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce!”
Below are some collective replies for our board of directors and ex-officio members. Please read and be proud of these individuals who are representing you, our members, and your business. The Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce could not be in better hands. (These are their actual replies.)
-
Jim Gerspacher – Gerspacher Real Estate Group
The Chamber has continually been behind or leading many significant economic development efforts for the City and the County. Certainly without the support of the Chamber acting as a catalyst the fiber project may never have come to fruition. The Chamber was the rallying point to raise funds for the feasibility study that gave life to the project. And they have continued to be supportive during the 12 year journey to implementation.
-
Chad Wilson – Rapid Marketplace
For me, the Chamber gave life to the start of our business 11 years ago. In our first year of existence, we joined and became active in the Medina Chamber. This lead to so many opportunities in the community and allowed us to expand our staff. The Chamber and its membership were supportive and encouraging from the beginning. I’m not sure we would have gotten our feet off the ground without the Chamber.
-
Keith Hughes - Dyer, Hughes, Roche & Wilson, Inc.Being an active member of the Chamber is the key, in my opinion. Doing so allows members to:
1. Network with local businesses – this will result in gaining new customers, aligning with key centers of influence within our community, partnering with other service providers that can help our customers
2. Have a voice and impact on how business is done in our community
3. Be informed on legislative updates, political issues and economic development initiatives
Without the Chamber, our local businesses would have to each do their own work in terms of understanding legislative issues, economic development matters, being informed on how to run and grow their business. Our members can benefit from our Chamber who does a lot of that work and avoid the redundancies that would otherwise take place by everyone doing it themselves.
Bottom line: businesses in the Greater Medina area are fortunate to have a Chamber that is as proactive and informed as ours.
-
Delmar Jones – Jonesy’s Classic Cleaners
Why the chamber has been successful is for two reasons: dedication/commitment of your board & chamber staff…they’ve all demonstrated passion to their roles unique to many of the boards I’ve seen overall. Medina is a great package overall for their citizens & businesses…you have to have a group that can help in the leadership of the shared vision of many who reside here.
View without the Chamber: Difficult to imagine… this group is the focal point for showing support towards its members and can be the voice/push needed from time to time from government to small business leaders to stay on task and make things happen to support the local area.
-
Michael Baach – Philpott Rubber Company
Without the Chamber. . .
Company owners, managers and employees alike would lose an important point of access to government officials that allow us to help shape public policy. We would also lose a key vehicle for holding our government representatives accountable for their actions as they relate to support of our business community.
-
Jim Bigam – Medina Hospital
For me, the Chamber is a living and breathing organization with our hands on the pulse of our member partners and their best interests constantly on its mind. We are not just a membership. We are not just a status symbol; we are not just a name. We are the thread that has weaved itself into the fiber of our community. We are not just an organization; we are a real part of our community.
-
Larry Johns – McJak Candy Company
In my opinion, the most important benefit of the Chamber is maintaining an ongoing dialog with the state and federal governments. Particularly with the current anti-business tone in the executive branch of the federal government, it is critical that we keep the concerns of small, local businesses in front of our legislators. The Chamber does this by hosting business tours for elected officials and with the Columbus and Washington trips.
-
Kathy Breitenbucher – The Pedestal Group
For me, what we would lose without the Chamber are the innovative programs that are brought here and piloted until they are spun off into entities of their own. Leadership Medina County, Economic Development, and now YEA are so amazing and have such an influence on so many, it is important to remember they all started with the Chamber!
-
Amy Demlow – Critchfield, Critchfield and Johnston, Ltd
The Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce provides a strong voice for businesses not only locally but at the state and federal level. The Chamber symbolizes the adage “There is strength in numbers.”
-
Dave Mueller – BPR/Rico Equipment, Inc.
When I joined the Chamber years ago, I joined because I thought it would be a show of support for other local small businesses in our community as well as an opportunity to meet fellow business owners who shared similar business goals. Reflecting back, the Chamber has been exactly that but to my surprise – much more. The Chamber has been a facilitator between the local schools and business owners on taxation issues resulting in what I consider to be a win/win for property owners and the schools. The Chamber has helped educate the community on the controversial issue of horizontal-fracking by recruiting college professors to speak on the subject in our community.
-
Mark Williams – Williams on the Lake
I just think of all of the groups that wouldn't exist without the Chamber, i.e. YPA, YEA, Safety Council, Main Street Medina, the Ice festival, etc. This is a telling (recent) history of our Chamber's efforts in our community.
-
Don Simmons – Simmons Brothers Corporation
Needs for Business:
A Voice of Business:
1. In the community - information on what business means to the residents:
A. Job Creation
B. Taxes Paid
C. Availability of business people to serve on boards and commissions in the community.
D. Community involvement with sponsorships of youth and adult activities.
2. With the schools -
To work constructively with all levels of educational institutions: from elementary - high school, college, vo-ed, and tech training - to meet the needs of businesses in the area to provide a work force relevant to the jobs available.
3. With Governmental entities:
Federal - Trip to Washington and meetings with congressmen.
State - Meetings with legislators.
Regional - NOACA and others
County - Commissioners, Engineer, Building Department
Local - City, Township, Zoning, Planning
All levels of government officials need to be constantly updated with education on business needs. Schools too.
It was because of these needs (and others) that a group of members chose to save the Chamber back in the mid-60's. We all knew that individually it was impossible to have a voice of business in our community, but collectively, we could at lease make an attempt to be heard and give an audience to our concerns and suggestions.
Was it worth it? Did it work?
With a number of dedicated boards of directors since that time, and the often times inspired leadership of Bill Henschel, Gene Morris and now, Debra Lynn-Schmitz, the Chamber continues to address most of the needs listed above.
What would it be like without the Chamber? Don't ask.
As you can see, it is an honor to serve on such a positive thinking board. These are passionate, successful, well-informed people who live and work in our community. They are educated not only on the local level, but on state and federal issues as well and their dedication to you and your business begins with their commitment to the success of the Chamber. Can you imagine the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce without them? I cannot.
Speaking of touching people’s lives, the directors and ex-officios of the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome our newest board member, Kathy Brietenbucher. Many of you may already know Kathy. If you do not, I would encourage you at the next membership meeting to introduce yourself. With her knowledge and limitless energy you will immediately understand why we are looking forward to her board participation in the coming years.
Respectfully submitted,
Valerie L Rapp

Twenty-five Years of Change
Debra Lynn-Schmitz
When I moved to Medina in 1981, I commuted to downtown Cleveland to work at Ohio Bell. There were times when I left for work that I wouldn’t see another car until I got to Strongsville. With the break-up of the Bell companies in 1984, I needed a new career. My husband and I tried to move to Florida but that only lasted a few months. During those months in Florida I worked for the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce selling memberships in the construction industry. That’s where I chose my new career with a Chamber of Commerce.
I started with the Medina Chamber on May 20, 1987 with a Business after Business at Berkley-Small, a company that manufactured newspaper dispensers and was located where Packaging Specialties is today. W. Eugene “Gene” Morris was the Executive, Barbara Morris and Karen Whitaker were the office staff. Karen just celebrated 30 years with the Chamber – Congratulations, Karen! The Chamber office was located further north on Court St. and shared the facilities with the Board of Realtors. I was an intern from the University of Akron finishing my Bachelor’s in Business and Organization Communication and worked 20 hours a week (for free) through that December.
In February 1988 the Chamber hired me to produce an image book about Medina. With the help of several Medina people including Judi Terrell Linden, Jeff Kehnle and Linda Conn Amstutz we printed and distributed a Medina image book, Ready for Tomorrow, Today. Then, in October, 1988 I became a full-time employee. I had several different titles but I managed events, communications, committees and programs. We ran the Oktoberfest at the Fairgrounds, managed the Candlelight Walk and a variety of one-time and short-lived events.
The community was fairly small compared to today. I know I’m going to get some of these wrong and I apologize in advance. The population was about 16,000 in the City (today it is around 27,000). There were about 250 members in the Chamber. There weren’t many places to shop. Of course Root Candles was here but with a much smaller retail area.
The Square had been restored in the 70’s. Norman’s was located where the empty Grand Market is today on the Square. Whitey’s Army Navy, Gramercy Gallery, Medina Hardware, Zieglers were there. Banc One and Marco, Marco and Bailey, Bix’s, Smuckers Insurance, Old Phoenix Bank, High’s Office Supplies were well established. Buehler’s and K-Mart were here but K-Mart moved into its now closed, new location shortly after I started with the Chamber. In fact, I had the opportunity to meet Martha Stewart with the grand opening of the first Super K-Mart right here in Medina. There were a few different local restaurants and bars but not too many fast food places.
Medina Hospital was very small and there really wasn’t much between the Hospital and Interstate 71. Washington Courts and the Lutheran Church were there. Route 18 east was still farms and homes between I-71 and Summit County.
Reagan Parkway didn’t exist and there wasn’t much past the Medina Shopping Center going north. Going south there were mostly homes and the Stop-n-Go was just going in but Michael’s Restaurant was popular.
Going west on 18 things haven’t changed all that much but Permold, an aluminum foundry, was still operating. The Career Center, Gazette, Liberty Inn and Kelly’s (where Corkscrew is now) were there.
Retail shopping was very limited. Ziegler’s was our “Department Store”, Medina Hardware, Drug Mart and a few other small women’s clothing shops were scattered around the Square and Medina Shopping Center.
The City was (as it has for about 75 years) discussing a by-pass. There is still a box of plans, meeting minutes and articles at the Chamber.
The Municipal Court was new, the “new” courthouse was there but there was a First Federal Bank on the southeast corner by the Library. The industrial area on the southwest side of town was thriving.
But growth was fast for Medina. Businesses started moving in quickly and it became easier to find items locally instead of heading towards Cleveland or Akron. As the population grew, the businesses came and as the businesses came, the population grew. I’m not sure the City was prepared for the demand. There was no comprehensive or strategic plan and we were trying to keep up with the growth without a vision. I don’t mean to be critical of any leadership then and I’m not sure we could have predicted the explosive growth.
I have served under 25 Chairman of the Board (or Presidents as we once called them), seven as communications, event, membership and assorted titles and eighteen as President. With fifteen Board members each year and as many as five changing each year that is about 100 leaders/bosses for me.
I have personally appreciated the changes over the years. Seeing Medina grow and thrive, watching as new businesses and residents came to appreciate what greater Medina has to offer. New schools, library, roads, homes and commercial development, changes and improvements all contribute to what we know is a great place to live and work. I hope you look at Medina today and understand that the Chamber has been an active participant over the past 74 years. This is a great community and a wonderful place to call home. I am honored to have served the community for the past 25 years and look forward to continue for the foreseeable future.
Thank you for your support of your Chamber and community.

President's Message
|
What have we done for you lately?
Debra Lynn-Schmitz
Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the projects and programs we forget to tell you just what it is we are doing. Since I haven’t written a column in two months there is a lot of information and it is longer than usual but should give you an idea of what is going on at the Chamber and in the community.
Jaclyn Ringstmeier has joined the Chamber staff as our Vice President. Her primary responsibility will be membership but she will also participate in our economic development and business advocacy efforts. Jaclyn joins us with years in the banking industry and her high standards for customer service and relationship building will serve our chamber well. When you see her at one of our events please make sure you introduce yourself. She can be reached at 330-723-2593 or Jaclyn@medinaohchamber.com.
The Board of Directors passed a resolution several months ago supporting the oil and gas development for Ohio. This exciting opportunity to improve the economic circumstances in Ohio is already making a difference in many areas. It is estimated that we will see more local efforts in about a year as the development moves west. Several of our businesses/manufacturers are already aggressively working with the oil and gas industry. Working directly with the oil and gas companies presents a host of challenges; however, there are tremendous opportunities for companies that provide services and products at the tier three and four levels. The workers in this industry will need places to stay, restaurants and amenities while they are in our community. Other businesses outside our area will need products and services that can come from our local businesses. This chain of opportunities can give our local economy a boost as businesses see profits, create jobs and generate taxes.
We brought in Dr. Robert Chase, a professor of petroleum engineering and geology to help educate ourselves and our community on how shale oil and gas development is achieved. On Tuesday our Chamber will receive the Chamber Action Alliance award from the Ohio Chamber of Commerce for our work in business advocacy. Through our Board of Directors and other interested volunteers our chamber has worked hard to follow those issues that are important to business locally and at the state and national levels. We review the issues, speak with our legislators and discuss the best course of action to influence pro-business legislation. Most of our members do not have the time to do this for themselves so we do our best to speak on their behalf. We have a responsibility to address opportunities that will help our local businesses create jobs and eliminate obstacles that are preventing your business from growing.
Last week at the Board meeting the Chamber Board of Directors passed a resolution supporting the formation of the Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) for the City of Medina. The CIC will provide another Economic Development tool for the City to help attract business and create jobs. A Community Improvement Corporation is a nonprofit corporation organized under the Ohio Revised Code solely for the purpose of advancing, encouraging and promoting the industrial, economic, commercial, and civic development of a community. The CIC can assist the City with remarketing land owned by the City and developing in accordance with a plan. It has more flexibility to assist a private development. For more information visit the headline news on the Chamber website, www.medinaohchamber.com.
This month’s member meeting at Williams on the Lake featured Kathy Breitenbucher as our moderator for a CEO panel including Mike Baach, Larry Johns, Dave Mueller, Brad Root, Ed McKeon, and Mike Warner. Next month Mike Rao, The Growth Coach will present, “People are Predictably Different…”. Make certain to RSVP for the lunch at Williams on the Lake on June 5.
Sometimes projects will take months to get on track and involve collaboration with other organizations and entities. The Chamber is participating in a coalition that is undergoing a feasibility study for an incubator in Medina County. Other coalition members include Medina County Economic Development Corporation, the Cities of Medina, Brunswick and Wadsworth and Brunswick and Medina Chambers.
With so many programs and events these past two months we have kept busy organizing and planning. It is the time of year for golf (and min-golf). Our golf outing has been going on for well over 50 years and is our primary fund-raiser for the Chamber. This year the committee has decided to make some changes to the day that will add more fun and value at our golf outing. The Golf Outing is August 6 at Medina Country Club.
And don’t forget our mini-golf outing is coming up. The Mini-Golf outing is just fun with networking, putt-putt, food and beverages. It is a great chance to catch up with your business friends and it is only $15 per person for the evening at Rinky-Dink on May 30. Visit the website to register.
We are looking at redesigning many of our programs events and committees. Please watch over the next couple of months for opportunities to get involved and offer your suggestions and ideas for making the Chamber even more relevant to you and our community. Or send me an email
The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA) is about finished for this year. The students are excited and made their presentation to our Investment Panel a couple of weeks ago. On May 31, the students will have a trade show at the Chamber’s Business after Business hosted by the Moose Lodge and Contemporary Photography. You can visit www.medinatv.org for airtimes on cable or watch it online at http://tinyurl.com/c9a4ljb.
We are already getting ready to promote the YEA! program for the 2012-13 school year. If you know of a high school student that has a natural passion for business or has a great idea to develop into a business, this program provides a hands-on experience. Students will meet with business leaders, take field trips and learn from experts on everything from business accounting, legal considerations, to writing a business plan and marketing. These are life-long lessons they will not learn in the traditional classroom. Contact the Chamber office or visit our website and click on the Young Entrepreneur Academy logo for more information and a link to a registration form.
Did you know you can post Hot Deals on our website? Free! You can contact the Chamber office for instructions. Hot Deals can include special offers that you can change as often as you like. While you are at it, you can also post job openings. We know they work because our members have told us. If you visit the Chamber website you will find other benefits and programs to help you with your bottom line.
You should have received a video regarding the new interactive map the Chamber is doing. Our project is with Hampton Publishing and you may receive a call from John Gootee. If you receive a call regarding a video project the City of Medina is doing please, understand that it has nothing to do with the Chamber.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me at exec@medinaohchamber.com if I can be of service.

Frontier Communications-Member Spotlight December ChamberLink

Frontier Deploys Latest Broadband Technology Across Ohio
Customers of Frontier Communications in Ohio are now enjoying the benefits of the company’s recent aggressive deployment of the latest generation broadband technology. The company fully deployed Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) systems throughout its service area in Ohio. These broadband networks improve the online experience for customers in terms of Internet speeds and broadband availability while enhancing network flexibility and manageability for the company.
Communities now served by this technology include: Ashland, Athens, Bowling Green, Brunswick, Bryan, Cambridge, Celina, Circleville, Dover, Georgetown, Marion, Medina, New Philadelphia, Piketon, Norwalk, Oxford, Sylvania, Troy and Wilmington.
The flexible optical network capabilities of ROADM are important as network capacity continues to grow and as demand for Frontier's higher-capacity residential and business broadband services increases.
Frontier's Packet-Optical Transport Network can now deliver more than 30 different types of residential or business services such as Ethernet (Fiber to the Office or Cell Site), Session Internet Protocol (SIP) trunking, Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Dedicated Internet Access Services (DIA).
“Frontier's investment in multi-service ROADM technology in Ohio enables us to give customers the latest broadband technology and increased network speeds,” said Dave Davidson, Ohio Senior Vice President and General Manager. “Our ROADM network will also serve as a platform to dramatically expand the availability of broadband in our service areas across the state over the next two years. We’re very excited about our new network performance and the reliable, higher Internet speeds that we can now deliver in these areas.”
Frontier’s High-Speed Internet service is delivered on dedicated lines from the company’s central switching office to the customer’s home or business. The service is supported by local technicians and backed by live, 24/7, 100-percent U.S.-based customer service and technical support.
New residential customers ordering Frontier’s High-Speed Internet services are offered two-hour appointment windows during which a trained technician will install a Frontier wireless router, connect the customer’s computer to the Internet and offer a basic course on how to access and navigate the web.
Customers may also select Frontier SecureSM , a full array of support services that include Internet security, technical support and online data backup.
For more information, residential and business consumers may call 1-877-462-8188 or visit http://www.frontier.com to check their eligibility or to place orders.

AT & T/T-Mobile: Good for Ohio's Rural Communities
|
|
Merger Could Help Create Economic Momentum Medina is having a moment. Our fair city was recognized as one of America’s most desirable cities to live in and one of the best small towns in the country. Most recently, Medina was named Northeast Ohio’s best hometown. These accolades prove what our people already knew. But it also presents an opportunity. Our enviable quality of life, ideal location, and status as one of the fastest-growing counties in Ohio serve as selling points that help us to attract prospective businesses and new residents to the greater Medina area. These selling points, combined with these recent awards, just might help us to turn Medina’s moment into some momentum. If we want to use it to create more opportunities and to encourage business growth, and ultimately improve our community, then now is the time. First, though, we need to focus on one area in which the greater Medina area falls short: access to high-speed wireless broadband. Many similarly-sized communities are underserved when it comes to broadband access, but consistent, reliable access to the next generation of mobile broadband should be affordable and available in all areas. According to Connect Ohio, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing high-speed Internet access in our state, 81 percent of households in Medina County currently have access to broadband. This number is far below our national goal of universal access. Broadband access has become a 21st century quality of life issue. Lack of access can hold our people back from countless educational, professional, and social opportunities. As many of you know, broadband access is also a critical business matter. As of 2010, Connect Ohio found only 67 percent of businesses have access to broadband. This is an issue because businesses in Ohio that utilize broadband had annual revenues of $200,000 more than businesses that did not use broadband. Imagine if 100 percent of businesses in our region were able to utilize high-speed wireless broadband. Businesses of all sizes, and in every industry, use broadband to manage operations, improve efficiency, and increase productivity. For instance, many businesses use broadband for online banking and accounting, as well as for online shipping and inventory tracking and control. Increased broadband availability also helps some businesses lower costs by offering telecommuting opportunities for workers. Currently, about 22 percent of Ohio businesses offer this option. Expanding the network infrastructure is expensive, which is why universal access is not yet a reality. However, the proposed merger of AT&T and T-Mobile could result in expanded access to 4G LTE, the fastest and most advanced wireless broadband service available. If approved, this private-sector solution would bring broadband access to over 97 percent of the U.S. population, and will do so without the use of taxpayer dollars. This merger is an opportunity for businesses and residents of the Medina area. Expanded access to broadband could greatly help strengthen our economic base and support the success and growth of businesses. Now is a great time for the Medina area, and expanded broadband access can help ensure a more prosperous future. You can find out more about the merger and how residents and businesses in the Medina Chamber will benefit as a result by clicking here.

MOSQUITOES FOUND POSITIVE FOR WEST NILE VIRUS IN MEDINA COUNTY
|
|
The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) Zoonotic Disease Program in Columbus reported on August 22, 2011, that adult mosquitoes collected by the Medina County Health Department on August 11, 2011, from the Letha House County Park in Chatham Township tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). Test results are not immediately known as laboratory testing takes about 2 to 3 weeks. “This is the first report of WNV in mosquitoes in Medina County since 2007,” said Donald Stewart, Medina County Health Department Environmental Division Director. ODH also reports a sharp increase in 2011 Ohio WNV activity. To date, the number of WNV-positive mosquito pools in Ohio is at 248. At the same time last year, there were only 78 positive pools statewide, with a year-end total of 260. With increased mosquito populations from the exceptionally wet weather this spring and summer, there is a higher chance of mosquito-borne diseases such WNV. “Fortunately, despite the increased number of positive mosquito pools in Ohio, there have not been any human cases reported at this time,” says Stewart. Because humans can get WNV only from the bite of an infected mosquito, ODH and the Medina County Health Department remind residents to take the following steps to protect themselves from biting mosquitoes and potential exposure to WNV: - Eliminate standing water/mosquito-breeding sites around your home (such as cans; bottles; bird baths; swimming, wading, or decorative pools; pool covers; tarps; buckets; tires; holes in trees; clogged ditches or drainage ways; clogged rain gutters; tire ruts; and animal hoof prints).
- Keep weeds and tall grass to a minimum.
- Make sure doors and windows have screens to keep mosquitoes out. Repair or replace screens that have tears or holes.
- Avoid being outside when mosquitoes are most active and likely to bite – evening, nighttime, and dawn hours.
- If you must be outside during active times, wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and socks, and use an insect repellant containing DEET.
Mosquito collections are part of the Medina County Health Department’s on-going surveillance program to determine WNV activity in the county. Stewart adds, “With West Nile Virus now present in the county, the Health Department will increase its surveillance and larvaciding treatment activities in the Letha House Park and surrounding areas.” Residents can report standing water areas and obtain more information about mosquitoes and the Health Department’s treatment program by contacting the Medina County Health Department Environmental Division at 330-723-9523, toll free at 888-723-9688, or by visiting its website at: www.medinahealth.org. Mosquito Control services are completely funded by your local property tax health levy. Medina County Health Matters!

LA CROSSE ENCEPHALITIS CASE IN WADSWORTH CITY
|
LA CROSSE ENCEPHALITIS CASE IN WADSWORTH CITY Wadsworth, Ohio - The Medina County Health Department received confirmation on August 18, 2011, of a case of La Crosse Encephalitis (LCE) in the City of Wadsworth. LCE is a virus that is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes. In the U.S., LCE is not common as only about 80-100 cases are reported each year. Likewise, Ohio typically has few cases, and in 2011 to date, 5 human cases have been reported, all in the northeast Ohio area. With the increase in mosquito populations from the exceptionally wet weather this spring and summer, there is a higher chance of mosquito-borne diseases such as LCE and West Nile virus (WNV). The Wadsworth case is the first report of LCE in Medina County since 2005. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), many people infected with LCE have no apparent symptoms. Among people who become ill, symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and tiredness. Some people develop more severe conditions which can affect the nervous system and cause encephalitis (an inflammation of the brain), possibly leading to seizures, coma, paralysis, and even death. There is no specific treatment for LCE infection, and care is based on symptoms. The best way to reduce your risk of LCE or other mosquito-borne infections is to prevent mosquito bites. The mosquitoes that spread LCE are most active during the day. Other species of mosquito that spread other illnesses bite at dawn and dusk. Ways you can protect yourself and your family from biting mosquitoes and potential exposure to LCE, WNV, and other mosquito-borne diseases include: - Eliminate standing water/mosquito-breeding sites around your home (such as cans; bottles; bird baths; swimming, wading, or decorative pools; pool covers; tarps; buckets; tires; holes in trees; clogged ditches or drainage ways; clogged rain gutters; tire ruts; and animal hoof prints).
- Keep weeds and tall grass to a minimum.
- Make sure doors and windows have screens to keep mosquitoes out. Repair or replace screens that have tears or holes.
- Avoid being outside when mosquitoes are most active and likely to bite.
- If you must be outside during active times, wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and socks, and use an insect repellant containing DEET.
The Medina County Health Department conducts an annual mosquito control program throughout the county to help protect the county’s residents from mosquitoes and mosquito-borne illnesses. With LCE now present in the City of Wadsworth area, the Medina County Health Department plans to increase surveillance and larvaciding activities in this area. Residents can report standing water areas and obtain more information about mosquitoes and our treatment program by contacting the Medina County Health Department Environmental Division at 330-723-9523, toll free at 888-723-9688, or by visiting our website at: www.medinahealth.org. Mosquito Control services are completely funded by your local property tax health levy. Medina County Health Matters!

When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on FSIS' website at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp. To prevent salmonellosis and other foodborne illnesses, wash hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat and poultry, and cook poultry—including ground turkey—to 165° F, as determined with a food thermometer. This recall follows a July 29, 2011 FSIS Public Health Alert that was initiated due to concerns about illnesses caused by Salmonella Heidelberg that may be associated with use and consumption of ground turkey. A total of 79 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg have been reported from 26 states between March 1 and August 3, 2011. The outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg is resistant to several commonly prescribed antibiotics. Among the ill persons with available information, 22 (38%) have been hospitalized and 1 death has been reported. As a result of the epidemiologic and traceback investigations, as well as in-plant findings, FSIS determined that there is a link between the Cargill ground turkey products and this illness outbreak. FSIS is continuing to work with CDC, affected state public health partners, and the company on the investigation. FSIS will continue to provide information as it becomes available, including information about any further related recall activity. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider. FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. Consumers with questions about this recall should contact Cargill's consumer relations toll free telephone number at 1-888-812-1646. Media with questions regarding the recall should contact Cargill's media contact Mike Martin at michael_martin@cargill.com or (316) 291-2126. Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within six to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days. Consumers with food safety questions can "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov. The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day. USDA Recall Classifications Class I This is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death. Class II This is a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product. Class III This is a situation where the use of the product will not cause adverse health consequences. Recommendations for Preventing Salmonellosis - Wash hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat and poultry. Also wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot soapy water. Clean up spills right away.
- Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods.
- Cook raw meat and poultry to safe internal temperatures before eating. The safe internal temperature for ground meat such as beef and pork is 160° F, and 165° F for poultry, as determined with a food thermometer.
Refrigerate raw meat and poultry within two hours after purchase (one hour if temperatures exceed 90° F). Refrigerate cooked meat and poultry within two hours after cooking.

Salmonella Reported in Ohio
|
|
Medina County Health Department Says Cook and Handle Meats Properly Medina, Ohio – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported one death and 77 illnesses from a salmonella outbreak. The outbreak is linked to ground turkey. Ten cases are in Ohio. There are no cases in Medina County. The Medina County Health Department helps investigate illnesses in Medina County. We will continue to update the public about any new cases. “Salmonella is preventable. Anytime meat is not cooked or handled properly, there is always a risk for salmonella illness,” stated Dr. Raub, Health Commissioner. The Medina County Health Department recommends: - Wash hands and kitchen tools with soap and water. Wash items that are in contact with raw meat or poultry. Disinfect kitchen surfaces using a solution of one tablespoon unscented liquid chlorine bleach to one gallon of water.
- Test food temperatures using a food thermometer.
- Cook poultry thoroughly. Cook ground turkey to 165 °F internal temperature. Reheat leftovers to 165 °F.
- Do not eat undercooked poultry.
- Separate raw meats from all other foods. Wash hands and kitchen tools after touching raw foods. Wash hands before handling food, and between handling different food items.
- Refrigerate raw and cooked meat and poultry within two hours after purchase. Refrigerate meats in one hour if temperatures are above 90° F. Refrigerate cooked meat and poultry within two hours after cooking. Set refrigerator temperatures at 40 °F or below.
- Do not put cooked meat on a plate that had raw meat.
Most persons infected with Salmonella bacteria develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days. Most persons recover without treatment. However, in some persons, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other parts of the body. It can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. Older adults, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness from it. Call your health care provider if you think they might have become ill from eating ground turkey. For more information about safe food handling, visit www.fsis.usda.gov/. More general information about Salmonella can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella. For more information about the Medina County Health Department, call 330-723-9688, toll-free at 1-888-723-9688, or visit www.medinahealth.org. Services are partially funded by your local property tax health levy. Medina County Health Matters!
